A Decade of Innovation in Multiphase Flow: Celebrating 10 Years of ALFAsim’s Development

In June 2016, ESSS Energy commenced the development of ALFAsim, a 1D multiphase transient flow simulator developed to bridge a critical gap in the industry: the need for a tool that combined high physical-mathematical rigor with an open development ecosystem.

As it reaches its ten-year milestone, the technology achieves its operational maturity, consolidating itself as one of the most reliable solutions for flow assurance risk management and artificial lift design.

Industry-Driven Development

ALFAsim was conceived based on ESSS’s solid expertise in computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computational modeling. From its very first version, the software was designed to go beyond off-the-shelf solutions, providing the industry with a simulation platform capable of seamlessly handling both steady-state conditions and severe transient phenomena, such as well shut-in and restart, liquid slugging, and solids deposition (paraffins and hydrates), with high numerical stability.

Over the past decade, three main advancements have marked the platform’s evolution:

  • Openness and Customization (ALFAsim-SDK): Setting itself apart from traditional market alternatives, the software introduced a customization framework that allows engineers and researchers to couple their own closure equations and transport models directly into the solver, while preserving the security of proprietary data.
  • Architectural Modernization: The transition to a Client-Server model transformed the users’ workflow, allowing the graphical user interface to operate independently of the processing core. This enabled the execution of robust simulations on local clusters or in the cloud.
  • Continuous Validation: Close collaboration with global operators and research centers allowed for the constant refinement of flow models, ensuring high agreement between simulated data and observed field behavior.

Expanding Frontiers: Digital Twins and the Energy Transition

The celebration of this decade coincides with a period of proven technological maturity in the digital transformation and decarbonization of the energy sector. Today, ALFAsim has already expanded beyond traditional boundaries, establishing itself as a core engine in cutting-edge industrial applications:

  • Real-Time Digital Twins: The software serves as the transient multiphase flow engine for advanced well integrity digital twins, providing real-time diagnostics and look-ahead simulations for over 800 wells under high-stakes operational conditions.
  • Production Optimization: well behaviour in multiple operation scenarios is captured using ALFAsim steady state solver and a proprietary optimization algorithm identifies the best field configuration, including gas-lift flow rates and pump frequency to deliver maximum oil production.
  • The CCUS Frontier: ALFAsim is a proven solution in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) projects, successfully modeling the complex thermodynamics and phase behavior of supercritical CO₂ transport and injection systems.

As the industry moves toward highly integrated and automated environments, ESSS Energy continues to evolve the platform, ensuring engineering teams have the predictive power needed for both asset optimization and the energy transition challenges of the next decade.

ESSS Energy extends its gratitude to all clients, researchers, and users within the ALFAsim community who trusted and contributed to the evolution of this technology over the last ten years.
