In June 2016, ESSS Energy commenced the development of ALFAsim, a 1D multiphase transient flow simulator developed to bridge a critical gap in the industry: the need for a tool that combined high physical-mathematical rigor with an open development ecosystem.
As it reaches its ten-year milestone, the technology achieves its operational maturity, consolidating itself as one of the most reliable solutions for flow assurance risk management and artificial lift design.
ALFAsim was conceived based on ESSS’s solid expertise in computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computational modeling. From its very first version, the software was designed to go beyond off-the-shelf solutions, providing the industry with a simulation platform capable of seamlessly handling both steady-state conditions and severe transient phenomena, such as well shut-in and restart, liquid slugging, and solids deposition (paraffins and hydrates), with high numerical stability.
Over the past decade, three main advancements have marked the platform’s evolution:
The celebration of this decade coincides with a period of proven technological maturity in the digital transformation and decarbonization of the energy sector. Today, ALFAsim has already expanded beyond traditional boundaries, establishing itself as a core engine in cutting-edge industrial applications:
As the industry moves toward highly integrated and automated environments, ESSS Energy continues to evolve the platform, ensuring engineering teams have the predictive power needed for both asset optimization and the energy transition challenges of the next decade.
ESSS Energy extends its gratitude to all clients, researchers, and users within the ALFAsim community who trusted and contributed to the evolution of this technology over the last ten years.
To support the technical development of the community, ESSS keeps the official ALFAsim training accessible free of charge. Click here to access ESSS Virtual and enroll your team.
