Brazilian companies ESSS (advanced engineering simulation), Intelie (real-time industrial data intelligence), and the Laboratory of Scientific Computing and Visualization (LCCV) at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), in partnership with Petrobras, enabled the development and deployment of ALFAtwin Integrity, an innovative platform for well integrity management. The solution is designed to unify engineering rigor and real-time decision support through an integrated architecture that enables proactive well integrity management.
Currently, ALFAtwin Integrity operates across more than 780 onshore and offshore wells, integrating high-fidelity engineering simulation with real-time operational intelligence. This integration allows for continuous well monitoring, early warning signal detection, and evaluation of operational decisions prior to execution.
The platform supports early risk identification, anticipates well integrity threats, and helps teams simulate operational decisions before execution, improving preparedness and reducing uncertainty in integrity-related interventions. Since ALFAtwin Integrity deployment, documented operational value has exceeded US$ 120 million, reinforcing the economic and strategic rationale for investing in scalable domestic technology. The program has also been recognized by the ANP Award in the Industry 4.0 category (2022), and was a finalist for the Petrobras Pride Award in the Value category.
“This is a great example of how collaboration in the digital space is critical to delivering value in shorter timeframes. It took 2 years from the beginning of the project development to its full deployment 24/7 for all Petrobras wells, considering R&D efforts and building parts of the solution from scratch. The good news is that now the solution can be deployed to the whole industry in a much shorter timeframe and R&D investments can pay dividends not only for those involved, but for the entire market in the form of safer and optimized operations.” said Vinicius Girardi, head of ESSS Energy BU.
ALFAtwin Integrity demonstrates how coordinated innovation, combining regulated R&D investment, specialized Brazilian technology companies, academic research, and industry operators, can advance safety, efficiency, and sustainability, transforming advanced knowledge into applied solutions for critical safety problems. By bringing together these entities, the initiative accelerates the creation of digital products with global relevance and strengthens the national innovation chain, positioning Brazil as a reference in digital innovation for the global Oil & Gas industry.
DSc Augusto Borella Hougaz, Intelie’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized “ALFAtwin Integrity proves that cooperation accelerates innovation, and that outcomes depend on having the right innovation partners aligned from day one. When ESSS, Intelie, and academia operate as one team, we combine simulation, real-time intelligence, and cutting-edge research to solve complex integrity challenges, and compress time-to-market from research to field deployment.”
